What is yoga?

Yoga is the union of the mind, body and spirit through the practice of physical moves or postures, combined with breathing techniques, in a quiet and peaceful environment.  There is nothing mysterious about yoga.  It is just an alternate method of exercise that invigorates the body, relaxes the mind and nurtures the spirit.

What is chair yoga?

Chair yoga is the practice of yoga adapted with the use of the chair to make it more accessible to everyone, especially seniors. Most of the moves and poses are done either sitting in the chair or standing while using the chair for support, although some poses are done independent of the chair.

What if I have not tried chair yoga before, how do I get started?

The best way to get started is to just show-up for a class.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move and stretch freely.  You will find a friendly, welcoming environment that will allow you to participate without any commitments.  The instructor will guide you through the class by describing and demonstrating the moves and poses.  Most first-timers find that they can do most or all of the class with minimal difficulty, while still being physically challenged.

What if I have injuries or limitations?

If you have any physical issues or concerns, please discuss them with the instructor.  She can provide guidance on how to accommodate your limitations. During the class, the instructor will offer alternatives to moves and poses that will allow you to fully participate within your limitations.

What if chair yoga is not challenging enough for me?

The instructor offers a gentile mat yoga class for those who want a greater physical challenge, and are capable of getting down and up off of the mat.  See the schedule for mat yoga class offerings.
